The Athens Photo Research Center (APhRC) is an institution for contemporary photography and visual culture, conceived as a space where images become conversations, boundaries dissolve, and artistic inquiry takes shape.
Rooted in Athens and connected internationally, APRC brings together education, practice-based research, and a community-driven spirit. It is designed as a meeting point for ideas, creative risk-taking, and long-term artistic growth. APhRC is structured around five foundational pillars — the Library & Archive, Education Programs, Research Activities, Artist Residencies, and the Public Program.
1
Library & Archive
APhRC is home to the largest photobook library in Greece, a unique resource dedicated to the study and exploration of photography and visual culture, offering access to essential materials that support study, artistic development, and academic inquiry.

2
Education Programs
Education is a core mission of APhRC. We offer a critical and dynamic educational experience through both in-person and online programs, ranging from immersive workshops and hands-on opportunities to a new hybrid year-long curriculum.

3
Artistic Research
Research is an integral component of the culture at APhRC, conducted and shared within the framework of artistic practice-based research—understood and experienced as a creative process that engages with, reflects on, and explores the evolving challenges in visual art and photography.

4
Residency
The residency program at APhRC is designed to foster artistic development, production, and reflection. Through the program, artists and art professionals are provided with the opportunity to develop new work, and collaborate with both peers and the local community.

5
Public Program
The APhRC promotes open engagement with photography through talks, readings, workshops, and public events, connecting artists and researchers with the wider community year-round and during the Athens Photo Festival
