ABOUT US

The Athens Photo Festival introduces the Athens Photo Research Center (APhRC), an institution for contemporary photography and visual culture. Conceived as a space where images become conversations, boundaries dissolve, and artistic inquiry takes shape, APhRC is rooted in Athens and connected internationally. It brings together education, practice-based research, and a community-driven spirit and serves as a meeting point for ideas, creative risk-taking, and long-term artistic growth.

At a time when freedom of speech, academic inquiry, and artistic expression are increasingly under pressure, APhRC is committed to protecting and nurturing these freedoms. We are responsive to the needs of visual art professionals and the changing cultural landscape, providing a supportive, artist-centered environment. Through educational, residency, research programs and public events, we provide mentorship, space, and resources, enabling artists and art professionals to refine their practice and connect with an intimate, inclusive community of curators, publishers, theorists, mentors, and fellow practitioners from different countries.

Based in its newly established venue, APhRC is home to the largest photobook library in Greece, along with a fully equipped photography studio, dark room, digital printing lab, and residency space—offering an open, progressive environment for students, alumni, members, and international guests.

Research and development at APhRC is situated at the intersection of artistic practice and critical discourse. We foreground embodied knowledge, process-oriented experimentation, and collaborative methodologies as generative frameworks for producing new insights within the field of visual culture.

APhRC LOCATION

Located in Athens—a city historically situated at the intersection of cultures, movements, and migrations—APhRC is invested in the local artistic ecosystem while cultivating international exchange. With a focus on the broader region surrounding Greece—stretching across the Mediterranean, the Balkans, and the Middle East—APhRC is grounded in a geography shaped by layered histories, shifting borders, and complex cultural entanglements. This intersectional position offers fertile ground for visual storytelling,  and critical engagement, particularly in contexts often overlooked within the global art narratives.

FOCUS AREAS

APhRC is structured around five foundational pillars — the Library, the Educational Programs, Research Activities, Artist Residencies, and the Public Program. These pillars work together to promote transdisciplinary dialogue, and diverse and experimental approaches to practice. We collaborate with like-minded initiatives and organizations to offer specialized programming and opportunities that further strengthen these key areas.

APhRC TEAM

The APhRC is led by its founding members, Manolis Moresopoulos, Sylvia Sachini, Marilia Fotopoulou, who bring extensive experience in photography, cultural management, and creative strategy.
